Capable Kids

June 7, 2022

The Capable Kids is an award scheme for primary-aged children to encourage and develop valuable life skills based on the Duke of Edingburgh Awards. It was a programme that was introduced for Aldenham Prep children because ‘in a busy world it’s too easy to do things for children, but when should they start to take responsibility for themselves?’The programme has helped Aldenham Prep children along with all the other children across the country to realise their abilities and, for some, to discover new talents and passions.

The Micro, Mini and Junior Duke has given children the opportunity to participate in a variety of new experiences. It has taught them that it is good to ‘have a go’ and challenged them to learn new and varied skills. Children have learnt that you may not always succeed first time and that is okay. This has helped them to develop the resilience they will need throughout their lives.

Some children across Aldenham Prep from Reception to Year 6 took part in the Duke Award scheme. Whilst the enthusiasm and excitement mostly came from the Mirco and Mini Duke Award holders it was the determination and perseverance that shone through the Junior Duke holders.

The Award holders were recognised in a whole school special Capable Kids Assembly on Tuesday where they were presented their Duke journals by Jermaine Jenas our Ambassador for Capable Kids.

Well done to all those children who took part and hopefully many will choose to take part from September 2022.

They learned how people in the Stone Age lived, how they hunted and gathered for food (including spearing Woolly Mammoths!). They built dens using logs, twigs, leaves, ‘brush’ and then covered them for camouflage with long grass. They also took part in […]
