Sixth Form Dinner 2015

September 25, 2015

The annual Sixth Form Dinner was once again a great success, this year’s theme was the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. Art teacher Paul Spencer (Potts) had been working on the theme and decorations for the event since the day after the last extravaganza commemorating the 100th anniversary of the start of World War Two. As a result the atmosphere in the Dining Hall was breath taking, presided over by the busts of the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon and festooned with flags and artefacts of the time.

The tables looked splendid with cannon shaped wine coolers along with cannon ball name card holders and cartoon placemats to lighten the tone. Napoleonic candelabras and bowls of red and white roses decorated the top table. The walls and display tables were decorated with numerous medals, weapons and coins from the era, pictures, a large map of the battlefield and not forgetting a pair of ‘Wellington’ boots on the centrepiece display.

The meal was delicious too, and all the attendees were beautifully turned out at their first formal dinner of the year. The after dinner speaker, an Old Aldenhamian, Toby Jenner (McGill’s 1984-87), spoke of leadership and inspired his young audience to take failure in their stride and to learn from the experience.

The Head Boy, Subhan Iqbal, and Head Girl, Sarah Dean, responded well reflecting on their own experiences, both positive and negative, encouraging their peers to carry on in the face of difficulty and never to be put off.

All in all this was a wonderful evening of comradery topped off with good food in a wonderful setting
