Success in new style GCSE examinations

August 23, 2018

At a time when there have been significant changes to the structure and assessment of GCSEs across the country, it was very pleasing that Aldenham pupils from Year 11 were able to receive such good grades today.

The new assessment means that pupils receive grades from 1 up to 9 with all grades above 4 being seen as passes.  The top grades are reckoned as 7, 8, and 9 which equate to the former A/A* grades. This is therefore the first year that statistics are drawn together in this way.

We were delighted that of the 850 examinations sat this summer over 92% were at level 4 or above.  73% were at level 5 or above and 31% in the top category of level 7 to 9. Amongst the top performers,  each of whom gained more than seven grades at level 8 or 9 (formerly A*) were Nicholas Davis, Emma Gillespie, Alexander Knight, Sarah McMahon, Milly Rees, and Jemima WaxIn all, almost 40% of the students gained four or more top grades of level 7 to 9.

Headmaster James Fowler was delighted that the new challenges of GCSE have been tackled so well by Aldenham pupils and staff: “ I congratulate all those who have achieved such commendable results today at a time when the educational landscape has been shifting around them.  I am glad that the hard work of the boys and girls has been recognised and the dedication of their teachers has been so well rewarded.”
