A Profound Remembrance Service
November 9, 2018
Staff and pupils from the senior school walked through a sea of national flags as over 50 pupils proudly held up their country’s flag on their way to a moving Remembrance Service led by Revd Jos Perris, enhanced by the wonderful organ playing of Mr Austin. These flags were then draped over the altar, symbolising that we are all united in our commitment to peace.
The Chaplain spoke about the importance of remembering, which can enable healing. She referred to The Light Display at The Abbey in St Albans and the ‘There but not There’ Campaign currently running across churches, where Perspex silhouettes of men are placed in church seats to represent those who had died from that village.
The Choir led by our Director of Music, Mr Rayfield, sang ‘Lead me Lord’. Head Boy and Girl, Michael Li and Sasha MacDonald read the 19 names of OAs who died between 1917-1918. Dominic Hampstead, Danyal Hussain and Joshua Jayson played the trumpet magnificently for the Last Post and the Reveille. Wreaths were laid by the CCF, the Head Boy and Head Girl and the Chair of Governors Mr Trevor Barton (OA). The prayers were led beautifully by our Junior Head Boy and Girl, Jo Hime and Penzy Thairu, concluding a profound and beautiful service. Everyone left in silence as the Chapel bell tolled 288 times to represent all those pupils from Aldenham who have lost their lives due to war.
