Girls’ Hockey Tour to Holland

November 4, 2017

In October half term 21 girls, mostly the 1st XI and U15 squads, excelled themselves both on and off the Hockey pitches in Holland. They were highly supportive of each other and a credit to the School. We look forward to them continuing the season with the same confidence and self-belief.

First sight of Rotterdam HC can be intimidating with 9 artificial pitches, a large stadium and vast numbers of Dutch boys and girls training but the girls were undaunted. Over the next few days they enjoyed coaching by a variety of international players including the New Zealand captain, and they met and watched Rotterdam’s men training which included several world cup finalists.

The 1st XI won their first game 2-0, then moved to the main stadium pitch where they played out a highly competitive 0-0 draw. The game was full of goal line clearances, posts being hit by both sides and last gasp tackles. The midfield quartet of Hana Hashiba - Charlton, Emma Conway , Debbie Okeowo and Sasha McDonald were outstanding players.

The U15s also won their first game 2-0 and in their second game scored twice in the last 5 minutes to earn a hard fought 2-2 draw. Special mention goes to Milly Gall who ran 75 yards to score an outstanding equaliser with one minute left.

In between times many waffles were consumed in Rotterdam city centre, some very scary rides undertaken in Amsterdam city centre and many pancakes eaten whilst touring Amsterdam’s canals.
