Performances

There is ample opportunity to be involved in performances throughout the year, either at large scale events in front of the whole school and guests, or at less formal occasions such as the Friday afternoon Concert Party that regularly visits Old People's Homes, Tuesday lunchtime recitals, and in the weekly School Assembly.

Every term sees at least two major musical events:

  • In the Autumn Term the whole school takes part in the House Music Competition (Unison Song, Part Song, Instrumental, Ensemble and Solo) and the Carol Service which is held in St. Albans Abbey. There is a Pupils' Concert in November featuring the Orchestra, Concert Band and other groups as well as solos, and the whole school attends the Remembrance Day Service, one of several occasions in the year when the Brass Group features prominently.
  • In the Spring Term GCSE and A level candidates put on a concert, and at the end of term the whole school takes part in the Spring Concert when a major work is performed using a full choir, soloists and orchestra. Recently performed works have included Mozart’s Requiem and a concert version of Bizet’s Carmen, The Pirates of Penzance and Orff’s Carmina Burana (at the Barbican Centre).
  • The Summer Term sees another Pupils' Concert, the Beck Competition for solo performers, Martineau’s House Music Competition and an opportunity for musical performance at one of the major chapel services on Visitation Day.
